After Election Day

Updated: Nov 7

Today, our country stands at a crossroads. It’s Election Day—a day filled with anticipation, passion, and no small amount of anxiety. It’s a day when we gather to make decisions that will shape our future, but it’s also a day that can bring out our deepest divisions. Some of us will go to bed tonight hopeful, others disappointed, and still others uncertain of what tomorrow may hold.

But when we wake up tomorrow, it will be a new day.

We’ve seen in recent years how easily our nation’s differences can turn into divides—into rifts so deep they seem impossible to bridge. Election cycles have amplified those divides, setting us against one another in ways that can be hard to understand and even harder to mend. We’ve watched relationships strain, trust erode, and at times, our belief in the promise of unity waver. Today, as we cast our ballots and voice our hopes for the future, we also carry the weight of our shared struggles. Yet, we stand on the edge of a new beginning, and with that, a new opportunity.

The Gift of Tomorrow

No matter the outcome tonight, tomorrow is a gift. It’s a fresh chance to look beyond our divisions and see the faces of those around us not as opponents or adversaries, but as neighbors, as fellow humans walking the same uncertain path. Tomorrow, we’ll have a choice: Will we carry the day’s tension into our lives, letting it harden our hearts? Or will we choose to begin the healing?

This isn’t just a call to be civil—it’s a call to open our hearts to the work of peacemaking, the kind of peace that requires courage and sacrifice. Jesus taught, “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.” These aren’t just words for comfortable times; they’re words for moments like this, when choosing peace means embracing humility and setting aside pride. Tomorrow, can we rise as children of God, bearers of a peace that mends instead of divides?

Listening: A First Step Toward Healing

Tomorrow, when we encounter those who may have cast a different vote or held a different vision, let us choose to listen before we speak. Let us make space for understanding. Honest listening isn’t easy, especially when emotions are high and wounds fresh. But listening is the beginning of connection, of seeing the heart behind the opinion, the person behind the stance.

True change starts in those small moments, in a willingness to step beyond our convictions and into another’s story. We may not always agree, but in our efforts to understand, we create openings for healing.

Love Beyond Boundaries

As Christians, we are called to live with a love that breaks boundaries, that transcends affiliations and ideologies. It’s this love—sacrificial, unyielding, and fierce—that defines us more than any vote we cast. Jesus told us, “By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”

Can we rise tomorrow committed to this love, committed to being known for our kindness, our grace, our willingness to see Christ in every face we encounter? In the days ahead, let’s be people whose faith overcomes any earthly loyalty, choosing unity over division, empathy over bitterness. Our love for Christ calls us to meet others where they are, and to love them not for how they agree with us, but because they too are loved by Him.

Reflecting on God’s Unchanging Sovereignty

Finally, let us anchor ourselves in God’s unchanging sovereignty. No election, no leader, no outcome can alter the fact that He is in control. Psalm 46:10 reminds us, “Be still, and know that I am God.” This is not just a command; it is a comfort, a source of strength in uncertain times. As we navigate the days ahead, let us find peace in this promise. Our hope rests not in temporary outcomes, but in the eternal love and justice of God.

A Prayer for Healing and Unity

As this election draws to a close, may we turn to God with open hearts.

Lord, as we step into tomorrow, help us to lay down our divisions. Soften our hearts to those around us, that we may see them as You see them. Give us the courage to listen, to love, to be gentle in our words and generous in our actions. May Your peace dwell in us, guiding us to be people of healing and hope. Lead us forward, that we may build bridges, bring understanding, and reflect Your love in all we do. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

A Call to Rise with Hope

Tomorrow, let’s rise with a renewed commitment to the work of unity, knowing that it begins with each of us, in our words, our actions, our choices. Let’s be known for our gentleness, our strength, and our unwavering hope in a better, kinder world. May we set aside the need to win arguments and instead strive to win hearts, walking the path of Christ with love that rebuilds what division has torn down.

This new day is a gift—a chance to be the change we long to see, to be ambassadors of peace in a weary world. Together, let us embrace this calling, choosing the harder but holier path toward healing. May our steps be guided by hope, our hearts by love, and our future by the eternal promise that, in Christ, all things are possible.
